There are random missing photos that aren’t on my phone or iCloud. The pictures are either screen shots on my phone or pictures my husband took on his XS Max and sent to me, I can tell by the properties. The photos appear to still be on his cloud for the few that I dig deeper into. It looks like it just needs to download but it doesn’t when you click on it. The photos aren’t from a shared album as far as I can tell. See photo attached. Dates range from May 2012 - June 2020. There are at least a hundred photos missing.

Some of the screenshots taken on my Mac have been showing exactly the same problem. I could neither open the photos on my iPhone nor the iPad, both with the current version of iOS. On my Mac the photos could be opened and adjusted. There has been no problem with my iCloud storage or the local storage on my iPhone and iPad.

To fix it I had to:

  • export the original files on my Mac and to save them in a local folder : File > Export > Export unmodified original. I tested again, if the exported files could be opened and edited.
  • Then I deleted the files from Photos for Mac, also from Recently Deleted, and waited for the deletion to sync to the iPhone and iPad. The deletion did not sync. The blank thumbnails did not vanish from the iPhone and iPad.
  • I deleted the blank thumbnails on the iPhone and iPad as well.
  • Now I reimported the saved screenshots again on my Mac, created an album with the reimported photos, so I could find them easily on all devices, added again the captions, and they appeared now correctly on the iPhone and iPad.

It looks like iCloud Photos had lost the connection to the original files.
