Phone carrier locked

I recently bought and unlocked Iphone 7plus from best buy and when I tried to activate with my phone plan they told me it was locked to Tmobile, I was wondering if it was possible to check the IMEI ?

Yes, they sell phones that they incorrectly refer to as unlocked. That is because most people, including their own staff, do not know the difference and often do not care.

The new “unlocked” iPhones sold at Best Buy are sold under the U.S. Reseller Flex Policy. Such iPhones are not locked to a particular carrier at time of purchase, but will lock to the carrier of the first activated SIM card or eSIM. Here is one of many nearly identical descriptions of it: https://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1887769-Best-Buy-Selling-iPhones-Subject-to-US-Reseller-Flex-Policy-Now

In case anyone is wondering and for future reference, The phone I bought from best buy was unlocked just not compatible with my carrier because the iPhone 7 is gsm, meaning while yes its unlocked it will only work with gsm networks. I have a cdma network. If anyones looking to buy an unlocked phone NOT from their carrier, I would recommend making sure its GSM or CDMA, or if it supports both there should really be no issue, but always double check that the phone is compatible with your carrier 🤷🏽‍♀️ You live and you learn.
