text edit changes css to rtf

every time i command s a css file it changes to rtf. how do i stop this

The default document format for TextEdit is RTF. If you are creating or editing plain-text documents, and .css is intended to be plain-text, then visit the TextEdit format menu and select Make plain text. Better yet, just get the BBEdit trial which gives you a proper plain text editor, and once the trial ends, it becomes a free application.


You will need macOS 10.14.6 (or later) for the current version of BBEdit, and v12.6.7 for macOS 10.12.6 or later.
