Correct. The 5th generation iPad Pro requires a Second Generation Apple Pencil.

There's nowhere for you to plug in the First Generation Apple Pencil on a 5h generation iPad Pro to even begin paring them. since the 1st gen pencil requires a Lightning port, which the 5th generation iPad Pro does not have.
