Monterey Preview app: Scan Documents with iPhone results in error "The device was disconnected"

Using Preview app on Monterey to scan 1 page using iPhone.

  1. Open Preview app
  2. Select File > Import from iPhone or iPad
  3. Select Scan Documents under desired device that is listed

The phone captures the document and I can hear the shudder sound. Just after the image was captured and should be available to save, error message appears on Mac: "Could not import from [device name]" and "The device was disconnected". The expected save option (on phone) to transmit the scanned image from the phone to the Mac is not appearing. Camera app on iPhone closes.

Handoff is enabled but it seems this does not make a difference. Any ideas what to look for? Thank you.

Not using a document/flatbed scanner - using an iPhone. The document you recommend seems not to apply.

Mac and iPhone are on latest versions and have been restarted as part of the testing.

I have also learned more about this issue.

First, it happens intermittently. There are times when the scanning described above works, other times it does not.

Second, the issue I described in my original post does not happen when I use the iPhone to scan using the following steps:

  1. On Desktop/in Finder, right-click
  2. Select 'Import from iPhone or iPad'
  3. Select Scan Documents under desired device that is listed

Which context menu is used (via Finder or Preview) should not matter in my mind, but I saw a difference.

There is no good way for me to consistently replicate the problem. And since there are at least 2 ways to get a scan to work, I am now less concerned. Hopefully Apple will be able to resolve this issue.

Hello, Oliver Schneidemann.

To start off, please make sure these steps are being followed exactly: Scan a document or image in Preview on Mac - Apple Support.

If the proper steps are being taken, check to see if the behavior continue with a different document. Also as with all unexpected iPhone behavior, try taking the following steps which may help with this: restart your iPhone, close the involved apps, then reopen them and make sure all apps are updated.

Let us know if we can help with anything else at all or if this doesn't settle your issue. Thanks and have a fabulous day!
