i have an iPhone 8S with iOS 15.4.1
I can be heard during a phone call; I can also record my voice in iMessage, but when I try to record in the Voice Memo app, it only records static/crackling rather than my voice.
I've reinstalled the app and turned the phone on/off. I’ve also checked settings to ensure the mic is on in the app. If the mic works with other apps, then I’m assuming it’s not hardware related.
Any suggestions?

It sounds like you'll want to follow these steps found in, If the microphones on your iPhone aren't working
to switch to the other camera. Then record another video while speaking at the top of your iPhone.Have a good one!
Thank you Les, but the mic used for recording video is working. The mic just doesn’t work with audio recording apps or the audio only function in apps such as messenger; iRig; voice memo or even using the microphone option to record voice in the Notes app. I am sending the phone back for repair to see if there is a hardware issue.
