Stolen iPad

When I try to lock my iPad why does it say pending? I can see that I never turned on find my iPad, which sucks, but if I can't lock it and I can't locate it can I still swipe it and remove all my information?

“Pending” indicates that Apple’s servers are waiting to deliver the instruction - as soon as the target device establishes an active network connection.

If your iPad has been secured by a Passcode, the iPad will already be “locked”. As the iPad has an encrypted filesystem, all of your data is inaccessible - and will remain beyond reach.
