How do I use ICC color management with this new Studio Display attached to my Mac Studio?

How do I use ICC color management with this new Studio Display attached to my Mac Studio? I was shocked to see that there does not seem to be a way to incorporate this display into an ICC (ColorSync) workflow. The built-in cal settings are close, but not close enough. Yes, I see the tweeky adjustments that can be made, but why scratch your left ear with a tool attached to your right arm? This is BS for anyone employing ICC color management. Maybe good enough for folks without the tools or knowledge, but not for me.

Bottom line: I need to override or build upon the existing presets by calibrating, creating and employing an ICC profile using my x-rite spectro and software.

Thanks for the update. Meanwhile, I read somewhere else that you should change the location of the icc file to Library/Colorsync/Profiles/Displays instead of ~/Library so that every local user (if you happen to have more than one) can access. In the ColorSync Utility you choose this file as the Actual Profile for your Studio Display.

This seems to work fine, even on restart.

BTW: The ColorSync app indeed seems to be work to be done by Apple. rgds

I did, using Datacolors SpyderXElite. It worked, sort of, though not very Apple-ish.

Best you start from the default Apple Display (P3-600 nits), so you can adjust the brightness of the screen. You measure your display as usual and get an icc-profile. Save it. Then, it gets complicated. You can use the ColorSync utility app to choose this profile as the actual used. It should work for now, on top of the preset, so to say.

But - every time my screen wakes from sleep, it looses the setting. So, back to ColorSync and choosing it again. Not very elegant, I'd say.

Thanks you, Joachim! That is a useful workaround until Apple sees the error of their way with this. I have been in contact with Apple support over this, but their engineers just blame XRite. They don't seem to really understand ICC color management and why it is important.

BTW, I built my profile upon Apple's D65 settings since that is where I want to be. Luminance is controlled by the profile. Their D65 settings are simply not accurate enough.

Here is an update: If I leave ColorSync Utility active I do not lose calibration upon waking from sleep. However ColorSync Utility does not seem to work very well on Apple Silicone. Very slow opening, crashes, buggy behavior, can't get a window in the app without force quitting and restarting the app (and waiting forever for it to activate).

Clearly Apple has some work to do on color management. Apple, start by hiring someone who knows what ICC CM is and how it is supposed to work. Then give credence to what they have to say.
