Adding an email account to an original iPad mini

I have an old iPad mini I’d like to set up for my elderly (94 yes old!) mother so she can send and receive emails and maybe browse the internet. I got her a google account, but have (finally) realized that iPad doesn’t support it. Is there a free email I can add to this iPad?

Current Google Apps are not compatible with the iPad mini1 - this iPad being limited to iOS 9.3.3/4.

Google’s Apps generally now require iOS/iPadOS14 or later. The Gmail App is an exception with lower minimum system requirements - this being iOS12 or later.

While Google’s Apps cannot be used with the iPad mini1, you should still be able to successfully set-up your Gmail account to be used with the native Apple Mail App. You will, however, have to use an App-specific password.

As for other “free” email providers - such as Yahoo, AOL and Microsoft - you’ll encounter exactly the same issues when using third-party Apps. Similarly, you should be able to set-up email accounts for each of these in the native Apple Mail App - but will also require an App-specific Password:

In common with many other Mail providers, Gmail now uses App Specific Passwords to access IMAP or POP3 mailboxes from third-party Mail clients.

The Mail App on each of your devices, such as your iPad, requires a unique password to be generated from within your Google account. This App Specific password intentionally differs from your Google account password - and can only be used to access your Google Mail.

The Mail App is installed by default on every iPad, iPhone and Mac; the App icon is an envelope on a blue background.

If you have intentionally removed the App from your iPad, it can be reinstalled from the Apple App Store. Here is direct link to the Mail App in the Apple App Store:
