I recently bought a new iMac 24 inch and I would like to set up a second monitor with it. I have tried to plug in a second 2012 iMac and hit Command F2 but nothing happens. This would work before with my 2019 iMac. What is the best route to hook up a second monitor with the new iMac 24-inch?

Your 24" iMac does not support TDM, please refer to Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support. To connect an external display first you have to buy one and then use the instructions in Connect a display to your Mac - Apple Support .

You cannot use Target Display Mode with an M1 iMac. You would have to purchase a separate monitor.
