Lost airpods

I’ve lost my AirPods and they’re in the case, the sound on find my iPhone says pending and it has said that for a while. It says it’s last location was at my house a few days ago , however I took the AirPods with me out but didn’t use them . I’m unsure whether I lost them in the house or inside the house. It does not say offline and it is not connected to my phone.

does it only make a sound when out of the case ?

would it be offline if I lost them outside the house ?
