Backing Up with a Broken Screen:

Maybe using an external monitor, along with the bluiltin keyboard and mouse/touchpad.

Connecting HDMI Monitor to MacBook:

Start with this adapter: USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter - Apple

Using this adapter, you will have a female USB-C port, that you can use to charge your Mac. Use the HDMI port for connection to a monitor.
