Unable to access a shared note

I'm unable to access a shared note. My notes app is upgraded. Notes is turned on in my iCloud. I have the most up to date version. The only folder in my notes is Yahoo! and there is no iCloud folder. My apple ID is my yahoo email address. Do I need an iCould email address to access the note? When I click on the shared note it prompts me to either select "not now" or "open". I select "open" and the note app opens but the note is not there.
