Emulate older macOS on M1

Hello,

I would like to ask, is there any option how to emulate Big Sur (eventually older versions) on MacBook with M1 and Monterey OS?

Thank you.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.5

Big Sur was the first operating system released by Apple for use on M1 Apple Silicon hardware. Older Mac operating systems are Intel-only and cannot run natively, or as virtual machine guests on the new arm64 Apple Silicon hardware.

BDAqua provided a link to the subscription Parallel's Desktop 17 virtual machine. They also have (provable) student discounts. Here is their KB article on Installing Big Sur as a guest, though this example uses last year's (16) version of Parallels Desktop.

If that is an M1 MacBook Air in your profile, there is no internal fan as would be found in an M1 MacBook Pro, and attempting to run a high heat-producing virtual machine would cook it. Wrong hardware.
