Ad blockers and Safari don't work well together

I have been using AdBlocker for several years, but recently Safari refuses to act predictably with it. I go to various news sites which will pop up a window which says something like "It looks like you are using an extension to block ads. To proceed, turn off your blocker." I do that as described. But the site still acts like I am blocking them. I have the same ad blockers on Brave and Opera, but do not run into the same problem, so it is limited to Safari. Any ideas how to fix this? I generally prefer Safari, but also do not wish to bounce from one browser to another. ERGO, if Safari won't play nice, I will leave it for another.

no, I know. there are many times I tell it to ignore that and it still doesn't work.

if you feel ambitious you can try using this to see if you can pinpoint the problem

Use the developer tools in the Develop menu in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

and every once in the while I need to reset safari by launching it from the dock and holding the shift key during launch, but this is useful for overall behavior, not necessarily things that won't get passed problems.
