How are you trying to open it exactly?
There should be a small hole on the side of the iPhone you press in with a sim removal tool or straightened out paper clip. Some times it takes more force than you expect however. Press in with some pressure.
Also, make sure the iPhone is not in a case. If it is, remove it so you can access the SIM card slot.
