Last night my iPhone was suddenly "locked" A lock appeared in the upper left hand corner of the screen (never saw that before) and I could not access any icon. There was not opportunity to enter my password. I can't enter any fiction (so can't access serial number or email etc.

Thanks for the guidance. Worked fine and being able to turn it off and reboot seems to have solved the problem.
Quickly press and release the volume buttons. Don’t hold them.
Can you provide a screenshot of this icon? I'm not familiar with an icon like that appearing there.
I can't access any way to obtain a screenshot. The icon is a light grey lock that is locked, which is slightly overlapping the time in the upper left corner of the screen.
I tried that. Nothing happens. The volume bar does show the increase in volume, followed by the decrease, but even when holding the side button in for >1 minute, nothing happens.
It would have been nice to see that icon in case it appeared again. But glad it is fixed.

I've never seen it or heard of the remedy!
Removed lock from screen, but still have zoomed portions of screen, notifications, etc.. when I swipe the screen. three fingers tapping didn't work. Happened once before but now it’s stick.
