Advice on upgrading late 2015 imac to SSD

My late 2015 iMac has gotten quite slow. Intel 3.2 GHz i5, AMD Radeon R9 M380, 24 GB RAM, Monterey 12.3.1.

Drive is APPLE HDD ST1000DM003, and I ran speed tests on it to find that its read/write are only about 50MB/s. I'm thinking changing it out for a 1TB SSD would give it a huge boost and give me a couple more years on this machine. I have a time machine backup on an external HDD.

First, is my diagnosis and plan sound? Can I just pick up any SSD off of Amazon, throw it in, and run a time machine backup? Any compatibility issues? What would be the best/easiest choice? I don't need it to run like a Ferrari, but now I get the spinning color wheel way too frequently, every minute or two. I also don't want this to end up being a big headache. It seems like it should be an easy fix?

Thank you.

iMac 27″, macOS 12.3

In addition to the new SSD, you will also need an adapter to change from the existing 3.5” drive to a new 2.5” SSD. You will also need an inline thermal sensor and adhesive kit to reseal the iMac. Check out https://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos for great tutorials and required components. I did a similar update on my 2013 iMac. The install took about 45 minutes, and the cloning of the old drive to the new SSD an additional 45 minutes. It was a great improvement.

Your iMac is probably has a slow, 5400 rpm rotational drive that is the likely bottleneck for data movement.

Unfortunately, swapping an SSD into the machine is a chore and the risk of doing irreparable damage in the process is high if you've not worked on these machines before.

I agree with stedman1's suggestion above regarding a visit to macsales.com for info and drive options.

I would also suggest, rather than replace the internal drive, simply use an external SSD connected via USB/Thunderbolt port as your startup drive. The performance improvement will def be noticed and it's so much easier to do than to R&R the internal drive. And if avoiding "a big headache" is a goal, then that's the way to go.
