Unable to set ESC key as shortcut

I'm trying to set the Esc key to be the Close command in Outlook. This approach has been mentioned in a few posts on the web. However when I try to create a shortcut, the ESC won't register as a short cut. I've tried ESC and ESC+Fn which another post suggested. ESC does nothing, ESC+Fn generates an error sound.

I'm using the MacBook Pro's keyboard to do this - with no luck.

Well if ESC is not cooperating try a different key and compare your results.

If you are determined you can try a third party app—

Keyboard Maestro— https://www.keyboardmaestro.com/main/

Karabiner—https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org/
