Neither Shazam nor Seri will work when I'm driving and using Apple CarPlay

How can I get Shazam or Seri on my iPhone 13 to identify a song (playing on the radio or a streaming app on my phone) when I'm driving and using Apple CarPlay?

Hello TheNord1,

You should be able to use the voice command button on your steering wheel, or touch and hold the button on the touchscreen display using CarPlay. Those steps and more can be found here: Use Siri to Control CarPlay

If Siri isn't working as expected while using CarPlay, these steps may help: If you need help with CarPlay

If not, let us know more:

  • What happens when you try to activate Siri to identify a song?
  • Are you able to use other features with Siri?

Keep us posted.

Take care.

if I try to identify music while CarPlay is connected, Siri says, “I can’t do that while you’re in the car.” You might have tried that before assuming there was something wrong with my CarPlay connection.

I found a post that states that Apple Music Identification uses Shazam and another that says that Shazam can’t work with CarPlay because Shazam takes control of both the microphone and speaker to listen to music. This means that the speaker is no longer available to play the music.

I hope in future iOS versions, Shazam (and therefore Siri) will take control of the microphone only, leaving CarPlay control of the speakers to play the music Shazam is trying to listen to.

iOS already lets me select different microphone and speakers so I’m surprised this hasn’t been done.

No, voice command button on your steering wheel doesn’t work.

Siri works fine for many things (i.e. making calls to contacts, entering addresses in maps) but when I try to activate Siri to identify a song (hey Siri, what song is this), Siri says, I can’t do that while you’re driving.

When I'm in the car and press the button on the Shazam app to do a search, the music stops (is cut off by activation of Shazam search).

CarPlay works fine.

I've worked through the steps in the article. I've got the latest car firmware and iOS. I've also insured that Focus for Driving is turned off. It's been this way ever since I installed CarPlay years ago.

I'm pretty sure this is a feature or a setting, not a bug. Otherwise, why would Siri say, "I can’t do that while you’re driving" when I try to activate Siri to identify a song (hey Siri, what song is this?)? It's like Siri is set to protect me from doing a song ID while driving.
