I have MacOS 10.13.6. I want to dictate a document - I forgot how to do this - can anyone help?

Where is my dictation function? Over the weekend my Mac Mini (OS 12.4) seems to have forgotten how to take dictation. Last week I dictated freely into Word (v. 16.62). Today, though neither Word nor Pages (v. 12.1) records my dictation. In Word I do not see any indication as to what the problem is. But in Pages I do not see the dictation tool in the Edit menu. I have seen that tool before. It is not there now. I did not change any settings in my computer over the weekend. What would make the dictation tool disappear from Pages?
