Apple Watch SE - display steps

I want to view the total number of steps on my watch face but seem to be only able to see progress towards “activity”… and I can’t set (say) 10000 steps as an activity goal (which would also work). Please tell me this watch has this basic function… I just paid twice as much as I intended to and now can’t seem to do one of my basic goals in buying a smartwatch…. I have an SE iPhone too.

Thanks for that. It’s frustrating… I was asked what I really wanted from a smartwatch and specified an accurate pedometer that I could check easily - amongst other things. I could have bought a Fitbit for half the price…
