Connect new monitor with USB ports to Thunderbolt 2 port?
Hello,
I have PC and a Mac that I'd like to use interchangeably with the peripherals in my home desk setup. I have a PC for work and a Mac for personal use. I'd like to be able to swap my monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc. easily between the two computers, since I use both every day. My office space is small and I don't have room for separate monitors and peripherals for the two computers.
This would be super easy, *except* that my Macbook is older and only has Thunderbolt 2 ports, whereas my work computer and monitor are newer and all run on USB-C. I have identified three potential strategies to try to swap my peripherals:
1) Dongle-palooza. I have a USB-C docking station that combines all the peripherals, and power, into a single USB-C connection that I am able to connect to my work computer. I can't find any adapters online that will take the USB-C output of this docking station and convert it to Thunderbolt 2 output, which suggests that it can't be done. But, it is physically possible to make the connection if I put a Thunderbolt 2 cable into my Mac, then a Thunderbolt 2 to USB-C dongle, which Apple sells, then a USB-C female-to-female connector. So, that silly combination of dongles and cables will get the USB-C connection to plug into the Thunderbolt 2 port, but I'm not sure if any of the display or USB peripheral information will make it through that Rube Goldberg setup. I don't want to drop $100 on cables and adapters just to find out it doesn't work. My suspicion is that if this was possible, the adapter would already exist.
2) Thunderbolt 2 dock. There are many Thunderbolt 2 docking stations available, but I haven't found any that accept USB-C input. Which again suggests, like the adapter solution above, that USB-C can't be routed through Thunderbolt 2.
3) Use the USB ports on the monitor. This isn't an ideal solution since the monitor only has two USB ports, but I could plug my mouse and keyboard into the monitor *if* I'm able to find a way to connect the monitor to my MacBook that also carries the USB data from the monitor. The monitor has USB-C, HDMI, and Displayport connections. USB-C doesn't seem to be an option (same issue as above). My Mac has an HDMI port, and HDMI works for carrying the display information, but it doesn't seem to carry USB information (i.e. the mouse and keyboard don't work). That leaves Displayport. Does Displayport carry USB information? And if so, is there a way to convert from Displayport to Thunderbolt 2 and retain that USB information?
Thank you very much,
Adrian
