Photos taken on my iPhone automatically upload to iCloud. I often transfer photos from my iPhone to my Mac for editing and processing. It appears that the photos transferred are also being upload from the Mac to iCloud. How do I prevent this duplication of storage?

Have you tried deleting a duplicate photo from iCloud to see if the same photo remains on the phone and the Mac? Pick a photo you don't mind losing. If it does delete it from the Mac and phone, check the Recently Deleted album to recover the photo.
Clarification questions - aren't the photos already on the Mac? In the Photos application is Optimization turned off? Did you try the link I posted above?
I get spooked by the message that files may be deleted if I don't download to Mac. I don't want to take a chance of losing several hundred trip photos to avoid duplication. Can you clarify what the warning message really means?
