How do I know that my monthly subscription has been cancelled? I am using my iPad and going through Settings as instructed.

Follow the steps in the support document you came from. If the subscription no longer has a Cancel button at the bottom as explained, then its already been cancelled.
The "Renews" Date should be changed to an "Expires" date also.
