I want to block a random number that texted me without opening the message as whoever sent it also attached a photo and whatever it is I don’t want to see it. But there’s no way, that I can find, to block the number WITHOUT opening the message and potentially exposing myself to inappropriate content sent by a stranger.
Can you see the sender's phone number?
Should be this case, write it down and transcribe it in Settings>Phone>Blocked Contacts... scrolling down at the very bottom.

You are correct. You cannot block the number without opening the message. You can let Apple know you like other options here:
