MacBook Pro not recognizing My Passport as backup disc

System Preferences > Time machine > (Select Disk) ...
should allow you to specify your passport disk as a time machine destination.
If it is not in the appropriate format for a new Backup drive, Time machine prefs will invoke Disk Utility to ERASE it.
