weird Mail grouping of messages

All of a sudden, Mail is combining new Mail messages with older messages, some as many as six or seven years old, as if they're related by thread or sender, when there's absolutely no relationship between the messages - completely random.

I've never seen this before. I don't know what started or caused it. I haven't updated my OS or Mail in a long time. I've been running Catalina 10.15.7 for a couple of years now.

Any idea how to fix this? I'll try reinstalling Catalina. That seems to be the only way to run repairs to it.

Mac Pro, macOS 10.15

Report back your success or failure after you reinstall the macOS on top of your existing macOS.

Reinstalling the OS did NOT fix the issue. It persists.

I've noticed more of a trend, though. It's usually two emails that are grouped - one current email, and one from six or eight years ago. The dates of the additional email are fairly random. IOW, it's not using the same date on two messages years apart. It's just showing me a saved message from years back grouped with a new message.
