Apps are staying on the doc

all answers to this are old, and don't solve the issue.

every time I close an app, the icon stays on the dock and I have to right click>remove to make it go away. How do I prevent these apps from staying in the doc?

this just started happening when I got a new macbook air, running monterey. It did not happen on my old macbook.

I can choose "keep in dock" for the important ones but what's they point if they all just stay there anyways after opening???

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.2

System Preferences > Dock and Menu Bar > Deselect "Show recent applications in Dock".

Where are the apps on your Dock?

In the left hand side of the dock there is a vertical line. Those on the right side are recently used, including closed app. The closed automatically get removed to make room for newer opened apps. ↑
