Macbook Pro, Mid-2012, New Battery Depletes within 3.5 hours & always dies overnight.

Team,

Ahoy!

BLUF: I wanted to get some help with my (antiquated) Mid-2012 MacBook. I replaced my battery 3 months ago because the cycle count was high. But, the new battery depletes within 3~4 hours (and always overnight). I have a second Mid 2012 MacBook, I robbed its battery (about 280 cycles) and again the battery depleted is 3 hours. I'm trying to keep this outdated but reliable computer running. Help me fix my battery!

Computer: Mid-2012 MacBook. I'm running Cataina 10.15.7 I've upgraded the RAM (16 GB) & the Hard-drive to an Angelfire SSD (500 GB). I have the SSD divided to run Windows (51. GB).

Diagnostic Efforts:

  1. I ran MacBook Diagnostics: No issues Found ( Reference Code ADP000)
  2. Battery Icon: No Applications using Significant Energy
  3. Activity Monitor:
    1. Energy: No weird Apps running. Here is a list: Activity Monitor, Safari, Spotlight, System Preferences, Better Touch Tool, Finder, BTTrelaunch, Avast, Time Machine.
    2. CPU: Long list of stuff. System use if about 6% on average, User bounces between 10%-15%.
    3. Memory: Pressure is relatively low. 16 GB of Physical Memory, Memory used 6.12 GB, Cashed is 4.18 GB
  4. Power Settings: For Battery- 14 minutes sleep. 2 min Display Sleep. (Standard settings).
  5. Battery Monitor App: It says the health is good and battery condition is normal.

Attempted Troubleshooting:

  1. Swapped in two different battery- Negative Results
  2. Re-installed OS (twice)- Negative Results
  3. Ran Diagnostics- Negative Results
  4. Restored from backup (Time Machine)- Negative Results.
  5. Looked for malware, used Avast, didn't find anything.-Negative Results
  6. Reset PRAM & SMC (about 100 times)- Negative Results

Hypothesis:

  1. Could Windows be a problem? I would assume "no" because it's not running. But, my knowledge of the inner workings of bifurcated hard drives is limited at best.
  2. Something is running & I'm guessing the computer isn't actually sleeping when I close it (despite the energy settings).

Anything you have in mind in terms of diagnosis or recommendations, I am all ears!! Thanks for your help!

Reinstall the macOS Anew:

Seeing "Other" in your first screenshot, you should backup your drive, and then format it, and then transfer it all back, through use of Migration Assistant. You've made lost of changes here, and troubleshot it many times. So, see if a fresh install fixes this.

Perform the following in the order provided:

I. If it applies: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support

Then...

II. Reinstall the macOS Anew:

  1. Boot: into Recovery Mode.
  2. Open: Disk Utilities
  3. Delete: the partition
  4. Reinstall: the macOS

Once Installed Anew...

III. Reinstall All the Software:

  1. Use Migration Assistant to move Apps a Files back in.
  2. Ask developers for new software keys- but contact the developers only --- none other --- or you may end up with malware and spyware installed.

Thanks for the reply. I took your recommendations. backed my my MacBook, deleted the partition, erased the hard-drive, and erased the HDD-data. I reinstalled the macOS via Time Machine.

I unfortunately had the same result. The battery drained by the machine was asleep in about 3-4 hours. The "other" space also remained high. I am working through a couple apps to try and clear out that data.

Other than a large amount of "other" space, a common problem on most MacBooks, anything else I should be looking at.

With regard to my battery, I've traded in a couple different batteries that deliver long like in my twin 2012 MBP, but seem to drain quickly on this machine.

Thanks, guys!
