Unlocked or sim free
Just bought a new 13mini and chose “connect on my own later” in order to change service provider… is this unlocked or sim free?

If you bought from an Apple Store it is unlocked. If you bought from Best Buy or Verizon or another carrier the phone may lock itself to the first carrier it connects to ... an unadvertised behavior.
No functional phone is SIM-free. Phones that support eSIM do not need a physical SIM but there is a virtual-SIM in memory.
