All I get when I double click Home on iPad 6 Mini is display off !
My older 2nd gen iPad Pro shows a scrollable array of screenshots,
in time sequence, so that I can touch one to go back to active screen.

Your iPad mini6 does not have a physical Home button. The Top Sleep/Wake button incorporates a TouchID sensor, but does not perform the same function as the Home Button located centrally within the bottom screen bezel of earlier models of iPad.
For your iPad mini6 and other models that lack the physical Home Button, the Task Switcher is summoned with an upward swipe of your finger, from the bottom edge of the screen to the centre, pausing briefly before lifting your finger from the screen.
