iMac fried by the macOS update

Yesterday I was upgrading my operating system in my 2 years old iMac. After 3 hours of the system appearing to be stuck on the startup screen, the computer shut down. I tried to turn it back on but no signs of life. A visit to the genius bar experts revealed that the motherboard was fried.

The genius said the warranty has expired (and although the update is clearly the culprit) and I have to pay for the repair.

Do you have any advice?

Mine is not to update
