Over temperature while charging

My 12 mini appears to be having battery problems. While recently charging by usb cable to lightning port and connected to CarPlay on a cool 65° day, it displayed a thermometer and a warning said it needed to cool down before it could be used. It also often dims the iPhone screen while charging and gets very warm using the usb charger, not even wireless charging. Battery health says it’s at 85%, but it appears to drain very quickly and underperform. Should I have the battery replaced or take it in for service?
