How do I download photos from my SLR Canon camera into my photo library in my new IMAC 24? With my PC, I I used a card reader and cable connected to my PC. HELP.

You'll need to get an external USB 3.0 card reader. Amazon has quite a few.
I second the recommendation to use Image Capture. My Nikon DSLR card has never shown in Finder until AFTER I download images. Image Capture acts as a translatro for some of the oddball formatting camera cards use. From mine:

I have been downloading photos from my Olympus TG6 to my 2017 iMac using a cable and saying OK to “Storage” when that pops up on my camera. The camera has always shown up as a device in the Apple Photos program. Suddenly when I plug in the camera it dies not show up as a device. I can’t download my photos to the computer.
I put the memory chip into my iMac and nothing is showing up in Finder. This is the first time I have this problem.
Or, turn wifi off on the camera and plug in a USB cable. Run Image Capture and download your images.
Reseat the card ... several times. Wiggle in in the slot if you can. Do both. Cards in Macs are problematic; best way in my opinion is wireless if available or via cable.
What os are you running? Monterey 12.3 had issues. Update to 12.4
