im trying to restore an ipad on which ive forgotten the apple id password

You'll need to recover the Apple ID password, otherwise if you have Find My turned on, you will not be able to restore it from the device itself, and if you restore it through iTunes / Finder on a computer, you will encounter Activation Lock once the restore completes.
