I get # when I press shift 3. I have tried all the suggestions in a previous thread ... system preferences, language & region and keyboard input preferences. Every time I go to input preferences the British choice is grey. It's blue when I click on it, but will be grey again the next time.
This is a new issue. Has happened once before but I can't remember how I fixed it!

Please tell us what you have on the list in System Preferences > Keyboard > Input Sources.
(Also, if # is on shift 3, then £ is on option 3)
