My phone has very limited space left for videos and photos I want to take when out and about. I'd like to use the movie app on my phone also. I do need to be able to store my videos for 'imovie' when away from my Mac on an external disc. thanks for help!

Once connected, you can transfer photos and videos to the external drive and remove them from iPhone. you then need to move them back if you need to access them from the iMovie App.

Thanks for your help Phil0124. Do apple recomend a particular external drive for the iPhone 7+ ?
No. Apple does not have any particular recommendation. Pretty much any external drive should work as long as it formatted as FAT32, exFAT, HFS+ or APFS.
It may read drives formatted as NTFS for Windows, but will not write to them.
