In 2018 my old router stopped working, and I purchase an Apple AirPort. The Apple router worked for a few weeks, then died. I took it to an Apple store where they told me I had to update the router on
Internet. They could not help me. When I could not make it work, a friend gave me an old router which is still working. But I would like to know if it is at all possible make it work, if so, how?
I have a MacBook Pro, an iPad and an iphone.

Apple exited the networking hardware business in early 2018. If I understood correctly from your post, you purchased one directly from an Apple Store that same year. If so, then if it stopped working after a few weeks and was told that it needed a firmware update, I'm surprised that the Apple technician did not just update it there. Was this not the case?
What we don't know is, whether or not, this base station (what Apple calls its wireless routers) is defective. At this point, you should still have the option to go back to the Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to, at least, have them take a look, and provide you with your options (if any.) Alternately, you can contact Apple Support directly by using the "Get Support" link in the upper right-hand side of this forum's web page.
I purchased it online (i.e. not an Apple Store), and it worked fine for a some weeks after which it stopped working. When I then took it to an Apple store, they told me they could not help me; that Apple had changed something regarding the router, and that it needed an update that could only be had online, with the router (that did not work). I may very well have misunderstood. I went home confused, and continued using the other router.
I will bring it to another Apple store, and perhaps try the "Get Support" link first.
