upgraded 2019 MacBook Pro 16" and iMac 27" with 12.4 release earlier today (25 May 2022) and both camera activation light on both systems no longer works. wifi is acting intermittently as well. I did an SMC reset on the MacBook Pro, had not observable effect.

apologies, realized I categorized this as Catalina but the description is correct. this is a Monterey-related issue that showed up after the 12.4 update installed this morning. SMC reset had no effect at all. I'm going to try the safe mode route and see what that shows.
There may be some third party issue involved.
FWIW, my camera works fine and the light also works.
It is not uncommon for a problem to occur on two macs - they probably have similar software installs, and thus may well have the some cause for the problem.
I recommend that you run Etrecheck and post its full report here. It is our best way of knowing of possibly problematic third party modifications.
Sometimes simply starting up in Safe mode manages to fix things.
Try accessing your camera in the Safe mode and see what happens. 😁🤞🏼
Camera non existent in safe mode. Realized USB charging is also dead. Now doing reinstall of OS. Hope Residual power is enough to do it.
That sounds like a hardware failure.
You need to get it serviced.
Reinstall of 12.4 fixed usb power but not camera light. iMac and MacBook Pro both have no camera light post 12.4. both ok prior. I use cameras in Teams daily.
