When I try to download MONTEREY I get this message:

This copy of the install masOS Monterey application is damaged, and can't be used to install macOS. What can I do?

I am using an early 2015 MacBook Pro 15 inch which should be compatible.

I am currently running macOS 10.12.6

Thanks

Jim

I’ll assume these are recent downloads of Monterey. If older, re-download and try again.

Boot into Safe Mode, and see if you can upgrade.

If there are any add-on “security” apps or add-on VPN client apps, remove those per the vendors’ instructions, restart, and try again.

Failing all that, see if you can upgrade to High Sierra or Mojave, and then to Monterey.

I was trying to download Monterey directly from the Apple site

That was what my previous reply assumed. Some folks download kits and wait months before using, some don’t. Some load their Macs with problematic apps, and some don’t. Sometimes macOS itself gets tangled. Sometimes the system time is set manually and is way wrong. Sometimes Safe Mode clears up issues. Etc.

Caution - jumping over all the newer versions and directly to Big Sur  / Monterey on Qualifying computers is Technically possible - there are those who have attempted and were successful.

Then there are those who attempted and had less than good results.

If this is a Production or Mission Critical Set-up - a more prudent and measure approach is suggested.

The above is from observations on the Apple Support Community Forums and IMHO

There has been a lot of time and version changes between macOS 10.12 Sierra released 2016 and Monterey released 2021

There are reports appearing on the ASC Forums regarding failed installation of Monterey on older Qualifying Apple Computers. In most cases this is related to having a NON Apple Original Internal Drive ?

The EFI Boot ROM included in Monterey is verifying for Original Apple Drive and if not found , may Balk or fail to upgrade to Monterey.

Reports indicate the EFI BOOT ROM is Required to Flash the Computer and is a  requirement for a Successful Monterey Installation.

Tend to agree with your above direction and with Mr. Hoffman suggestion.

There are probably some EFI Boot ROMs involved when moving up the hill towards Monterey.

This may be especially apparent if going High Sierra.

That is the first version of macOS to support the newer APFS Filing System on Apple SSD Drives.

The EFI BOOT ROM would be required in-order for the computer to both understand the new filing system as well as being able to actually use it.
