iOS 15.5-Photos and messages listed twice in iCloud settings

After installing 15.5 software update… I see photos and messages listed twice in iCloud settings.. Anybody else experiencing this? I currently have a case open with Apple Support and engineering is currently working on it. Profiles were installed on my iPhone 13 Pro along with diagnostics provided. Still waiting on results and feedback… Just wanted to ask the community to see if anybody else is experiencing this and any fixes?

Why these are Listed Twice.

  • Screenshot 1: It is there to allow this to be an iCloud service accessible on this device.
  • Screenshot 2: It gives you the option to enable or disable it monetary. You might want to disable it so that it is not uploading in the meantime iCloud, which, in turn, would allow you to delete the photo, prior to it being uploaded.

Reset to Factory Settings:

If you wanted to, you could try fixing this by reinstalling your iPhone anew. You'd make a backup your iPhone to your computer, prior to all of this. That way you can have something to restore your iPhone from, should anything go wrong afterwards. Then, proceed with the factory restoration. Perform as instructed here: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to Factory Settings - Apple Support

About the Apps:

These third-party apps are from their own Developer --so the Messages and Photos apps would not be affected. So, if this were me, I'd reset this to Factory Settings, seeing what happens as a result.

In Depth:

It might be sitting it as an extra app. So, did you ever download an app by the name Messages and by the name Photos?

Go here, and see if it is seen Under purchases...:

  1. Go to: View your purchase history for the App Store, iTunes Store, and other Apple media services - Apple Support
  2. Scroll to: Find information about older purchases
  3. View: [the Purchases]
  4. Proceed from there as necessary

Thank you for your response. I had a senior advisor remote my iPhone we took pictures and sent test iMessages with both sets of duplicate settings turned on and off. Both tests provided the same results. Advisor told me the second set of settings (screenshot 2) Is a bug and by toggling on or off basically served no functionality. Based on your response, if I understand correctly if I toggle the second set displayed in screenshot number two…that is related to back up functionality? Not everyone has the duplicate options shown in iCloud settings according to Apple support. I’m just curious what triggers this being displayed twice.

I looked through my purchase history and I do use Google photos for photo back up. Once photos are backed up I delete photos from my iPhone storage once successful. Essentially not utilizing iCloud photo sync. I don’t use any other messaging apps. I have family sharing set up with my 10-year-old and screen time content restrictions. I’m looking at his iPhone 11, which is not signed into my Apple ID as I created one for him and he has messages and photos listed twice in iCloud settings as well

I have a similar issue in that there are 2 entries for photos, I am a late comer to apple and as far as getting to grips with the ins & outs of iCloud ie: what & what not to store it confuses me especially as I am only taking advantage of the ‘complimentary’ 5Gb of space, how much more confusing it would be if I purchased extra storage I can only imagine. And before anyone berates me for being an ignoramus, I am well aware of my limitations.
