iPad Mini (6th generation) is compatible only with 2cd generation Apple Pencil.

The first generation pencil has an lightning connector hidden in the top side of the pen. Remove the lid and connect the pencil via lightning to your iPad. It will connect this way
Okay I should explain more. 6th gen MINI iPad with usb-c connection and Apple Pencil 1st gen with lighting connector. I don’t believe they are compatible?
