trying to backup my iphone 6s to my computer and to icloud but keep getting "an error occurred" message. did all the recomended steps, updated itunes, updated iphone, restarted computer and still nothing.

Hmm, so you get the same error when backing up to your computer AND to iCloud. Note: they are two different things. Start here:
