Copying Image Albums to Computer

Hello,

My iPad is running out of space. So I decided to transfer some image folders (albums) to another machine.

I've got my iPad 4 mini connected to a computer, I can access the DCIM folder.

But then I see lots of subfolders labelled with numbers (which I cannot even identify as dates).

Example: gphoto2//[usb:006,002]/DCIM/201412__

On the iPad I created albums so that I can transfer only specific image volumes to the computer.

Where do I find those albums when connected as a removable storage drive to a computer?

iPad mini 4, iPadOS 15

Hi cook04,

If there are specific folders you're looking to import that can't be selected, try moving to your PC first and then to the external drive. The section "Import to your Windows PC" from the article here has more details and the steps: Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or PC - Apple Support

To keep full albums iCloud or a third-party app found in the App Store may work for your needs.

Should you continue to have any issues, reach out to Apple Support directly using the link previously provided by SnickZ.

Best.

Hey cook04,

It appears that you're having some problems moving photos and videos from your iPad to an external storage device, and we're glad to provide assistance.

Connect external storage devices to iPad - Apple Support -- When you connect an external storage device to an iPad, it's to transfer files/photos and such to the iPad and not the other way around.

Since we're unsure of how to direct you further, we recommend contacting Apple Support to find a solution: Get Support

All the best.

Hello,

I don't have any problems moving photos from my iPad to other devices.

The only problem I have right now is that when I connect the iPad to another device, it shows me the folders of the image library but it doesn't show me any albums.

The photos were sorted into Album1, Album2, Album3. When I connect I cannot see Album1...3. Instead the images are scattered across various other folders.

How am I supposed to find those sorted into specific albums?

Hello,

Thanks for the hint.

But this fails right at the start:

"Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes on your PC. Importing photos to your PC requires iTunes 12.5.1 or later."

I don't have iTunes on my PC and it's not a Windows machine nor a MAC. It's a simple, universal Linux that mounts connected devices in the file explorer.

It's also not about moving images to an external storage device. I just need to download them onto my local machine (from where they can go anywhere) so iPad will have sufficient storage space available again.

Since this iPad isn't very new anymore and surely not within warranty, contacting official Apple support might not be an option.

And I fear they will jjst tell me to use iCloud- which I don't want to use for data protection reasons (I don't send any private data into clouds).

There must be a way....
