mail - turn off automatic address selection?

Hi.

I'm wondering if there is a solution to my problem.

This has happened several times in the past and happened again today. I was wanting to send an e-mail to a friend named Joel. I began typing his name in the address bar and Apple completed this for me. Problem was I didn't look carefully and the Apple e-Mail program typed in the remainder of a different Joel's address. Result: message sent to the wrong person.

So my question is this. Is there any way to turn off this process where App finishes off the address for you? It's a convenience I'd galdly give us so that I don't make the error of sending messages to the wrong person. Today I was lucky and saw on my "sent" column that it had gone to the wrong person. In the past when this has happened it has sometimes been a while before I found out, if I did at all.

Thanks.

John

Hello John,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

This is a feature called Siri Suggestions. These steps will show you how to disable it:

"Turn off Siri Suggestions

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Spotlight , then click Search Results.
  2. In the list, deselect the Siri Suggestions checkbox.

Spotlight searches only the contents of your Mac. Look up searches only the dictionaries enabled on your Mac."

More details can be found here: Turn off Siri Suggestions for Spotlight on Mac

Let us know if the issue persists.

Cheers!

Campbellstreet,

Got it. To ensure that Siri Suggestions no longer adds names to your emails, choose the Apple menu  > System Preferences > Siri > Siri Suggestions & Privacy.

Next select Mail in the list to turn off Siri Suggestions or “Learn from this App” on or off.

Let us know if this helps.

Stay safe and well!

Thanks for the reply. The link you supply above says Siri Suggestions relates to information and selections made on the Web. In my case, of course, Apple is selecting e-mail addresses from previous e-mail correspondence not from the Web. I'm afraid deselecting Siri Suggestions has not stopped my e-mail program from "guessing" the remainder of the e-mail address I'm typing and putting it into the send box. I've just tried turning off Siri Suggestions and still I type "Joel" and the send line is filled with the wrong Joel's e-mail address. I have to continue typing the correct Joel's full last name before the correct address appears. I'd ,just like to find a way to stop Apple from doing this guess work and putting wrong addresses in my send box.

Hello Grace. I'm afraid the suggestions you've made also do not solve the problem. I did as you suggested and still when I open mail and begin writing the name of the person I'd like to send e-mail to, upon typing the first letter of their name the app inserts what would seem to be a random address of someone or anything with whom I've had corresponcence in the past that also starts with the same letter. I have to either keep typing to override this "suggestion" or find the proper address from the list of say all hose I"ve corresponded with whose name starts with the letter that appears as well. At times I'll write, lets say Joel and not notice, like I did the other day, that the wrong Joel's address has been inserted by the e-mail app. All I want is the app to stop putting wrong addresses onto the send line. Let a box appear with all my e-mail address that begin with J, that's no problem, but leave the actual send line blank until I either finish typing the persons name/address or select it from the box of "J" addressed that has appeared below.

Thanks Ryan.

Seems that the reality is as you say, and it has nothing to do with Siri.

Removing addresses from the list is not much of an option though as most addresses on it are ones that are both correct and wanted.

My only hope, I guess, is that Apple redesigns the e-mail app at some point, making it such that after typing the first letter of a name only the box with a list of, for example, "J" addresses appears, but that none of these addresses is placed in the send box without you click on it.

As I've said before, over the years I've ended up sending e-mail to the wrong person several times that i know of because of this quirk of the mail app.

Thanks again.

John
