This may help depending on if you want to keep older messages or not:
In the left-hand corner go to Messages>Preferences> and where it says "Keep Messages" you can set it for Forever, a year, or 30 days.

Apple needs to fix this issue. We are all getting a lot more trash text messages every day now. So going through them one at a time is really a bad way to do this. Also I'm not seeing messages deleted on my iPhone showing up deleted on my iMac Messages Application all the time.
Try highlighting the top one then holding Shift key highlight the bottom one, hit Delete.
This absolutely does not work.

Feel free to let Apple know.
Monterey 12.4
Ah, haven't tested in 12, sorry... we need more help in here.
Highlighting the tp message, then holding the shift key and highlighting the lowest message then hitting delete does not work for me either.
AFAIK, you can delete multiple messages within one conversation but you can only delete one conversation at a time.
I can delete delete multiple emails in Mac OS and iOs mail apps, why can't I delete multiple conversations in Message App
Because Apple doesn't allow it.
Why not?
Only Apple knows.
Any luck anyone? My message box getting full of unwanted messages and cleaning it up everyday is frustrating.
