Whatsapp calls don't come through if phone isn't used for few hours

The phone is up to date with latest iOS 15.5, all apps are up to date as well. If I'm using the phone or have recently used it but screen is locked, then calls on whatsapp come through fine and phone rings.

However, if phone has been sitting without use for few hours (e.g. 4+) then whatsapp calls don't come through and phone never rings. On the caller side, whatsapp shows "calling xxxx" and it never switches to "ringing xxxxx" which implies that phone is either going into some sort of sleep mode or putting the app in sleep mode. Anyone with similar issue? fix?

Good day to you Buttermilk247,

A few things to check -

  • Make sure Background App Refresh is enabled and that WhatsApp is also enabled. Switch apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
  • Test the issue on both Wi-Fi and cellular data to see if there is a difference in the network.
  • If there is any VPN or security software installed on the device, remove it, restart your device and test again.

You’ve mentioned that your apps are up to date. Deleting and reinstalling the app may be necessary and you can also reach out to WhatsApp support for assistance if the issue is isolated to the app itself. For example, if notifications come in for cellular phone calls, messages in the Messages app, etc and the situation only impacts the WhatsApp app.
