No more kindle unlimited does apple do similar

Amazon is withdrawing the kindle app and as I pay for kindle unlimited, I wondered if apple did anything similar before I retract my subscription to them. I’m using an iPhone 7 at present

iPhone 7, iOS 15

Where did you hear or read the App is being withdrawn by Amazon? The Kindle App remains in the App Store and is free for anyone to download and use. It was in fact just updated less than a day ago (says last update was 15 hours ago right now).

You don’t need an unlimited subscription to use the kindle App. The subscription is optional.

You haven't been able to purchase books from within the Kindle app on iOS for years. Amazon has recently enacted the same policy for the Kindle app on Android phones. I wonder if that's perhaps what the email was about.

However, this doesn't mean you can't use Kindle Unlimited on your iOS device. It just means you have to use a browser (either on your phone or your computer) to purchase (or select in the case of Kindle Unlimited) the books you want. Once you do, they will appear in the Kindle app on your iOS device.

When you tap on a book to purchase in the kindle app, there is a disclaimer in the title page saying the App does not allow purchases. But if you login to a browser and purchase, then sync the Kindle App Library, books will be there in the Kindle App Library to be read.

But you’ve always had to make purchases outside of the App, to my knowledge at least in-app purchasing was never supported. Same thing with the Barnes and Noble Nook App. You have to purchase from the web site, then sync the App Library to get new purchases into the app.

I’ve never subscribed to Kindle Unlimited, but I would assume anything you add online to your Amazon account library under that subscription should sync to the App Library? At least from the Kindle App reviews in the App Store, people are using the App with Kindle Unlimited subscriptions.

Thank you for explaining 😀

Not too long after reading your post, I came across an article in my news feed about how you won't be able to purchase books through the Android Kindle app anymore. So, I think it's probably a June 1 thing. I can imagine it would be rather disconcerting if Amazon wasn't clear in the email (big surprise!) and you didn't know the back story.
