Wonder if that old Mac could start into FireWire Target Disk mode,

from there, if your 'live Mac' could see it (with FW adapter) to see

and copy the image files out.

Without booting the system..

Ran out of time 'online' for other ideas; or Q: & A: about PowerBook G4.

..Suzan268..

Other means to attempt 'reset admin password' include command-line

where no original install disc media from Apple, was available. ~ Or try

and use some other ideas I'd found. (Some no longer in reference.)

Helps to retain an original copy of the Apple boot-able install DVD or CD.

..So far you've not provided identification of your Mac's running OS X..

A few methods still online, show (or tell of) resets w/o CD/DVD, make use

of Command line.. Varying success, or a roll-of-dice; depends on your luck.

The following is said to work in 'Tiger 10.4, Leopard 10.5, & Snow Leopard 10.6' ~ to access or reset Admin:

https://www.macyourself.com/2009/08/03/how-to-reset-your-mac-os-x-password-without-an-installer-disc/

This one seems more limited, maybe to Tiger; or Leopard:

[Alternate links from same source, appear beneath. This uses Single-User mode.]

Another option to gain access, similar but not identical to above, is here:

The first one above, has better practical flexibility; could work. If still in the Game.
